Ted Turner hosts BSG Workshop at Vermejo Ranch, NM

The BSG recently held a very successful workshop generously hosted by Ted Turner at his Vermejo Park Ranch near Raton, New Mexico. The program included presentations and working group discussions to support development of a continental conservation strategy for North American bison.

With approximately 2 million acres of land, Ted Turner has been listed as the largest individual landholder in the United States. Turner lands are innovatively managed and work to partner economic viability with ecological sustainability.

Turner manages bison on 13 of 14 of his ranches on the Western plain. Collectively, his bison population numbers approximately 40,000 head, which is the largest private herd in the world.

In Development: Conservation Status Survey and Action Plan for North American Bison

During the next year, members of the BSG will be collaborating to draft a status report and conservation action plan for North American bison. The document will serve as a benchmark against which to evaluate conservation and recovery into the future and will provide guidelines for reintroductions and management of public and private herds. The plan will also provide guidelines for recovery at the level of ecosystems, requiring partnership approaches with agency land managers, private landowners, and aboriginal groups.
